A brief profile of
Provakar Goswami
Born and brought up in a family
having a tradition of Sattriya culture, Provakar Goswami took up
Sattriya dance as a part of his life. He entered into the enchanting
world of dance and music at a very early age. He is the ninth generation
of a family having the Sattriya tradition. Provakar started receiving
the training of Sattriya dance under the guidance of his father Guru
Nrityacharya Jatin Goswami, a recipient of Padmashree and Sangeet Natak
Akademi award. He also got training of Sattriya dance under late Guru
Roseswar Saikia Borbayan hailed from Sri Sri Kamalabari Sattra and
Rameswar Saikia Borbayan. Provakar completed the five year course Upadhi
in Sattriya dance from Asom Sattra Mahasabha and also from Sankari
Sangeet Vidyapeeth, Assam.
He is a Grade Artist (A-Grade) of Delhi Doordarshan in the field of
Sattriya dance. In 1989, he set up an institution of Sattriya dance-
Sattriya Akademi, under the guidance of Sri Jatin Goswami and is
continuing his involvement in the new compositions of the danceform
undertaken by the Guru Sri Jatin Goswami. Provakar received junior
fellowship from the ministry of Tourism and Culture, Govt. of India, for
his project “Abhinaya and New composition of Sattriya dance” for the
year 2002. Several young artists received C.C.R.T. Scholarship under the
tutelage of Provakar Goswami. His performances in many places were very
remarkable. He worked successfully as a teacher in the project of
Sattriya dance undertaken by Sangeet Natak Akademi in Assam for five
years. Some of the major events where he performed are – Khajoraho Dance
Festival, Nrityaparva in Assam, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award giving
ceremony in Delhi, Programm in Parliament House, Dance & music event in
Agartala organized by Spic Macay, Octev Festival in Trivandram, Alva’s
Virasat, Mangalore, Mahabharat Festival in Bangalore, Heritage festival
in Dehradune, Uday Shankar Dance festival, Kolkata, Appan Festival at
Delhouse, Guru Debaprasad Das Award festival etc.
He received Senior Fellowship for the project on ‘Comparative Study of
Bhariman (foot work) in Sattriya dance and Chaari of Natya Sastra for
the year 2013, Ministry of culture Govt. of India.
